An angry Ryanair passenger who held a winning in-flight scratchcard couldn’t stomach it when informed he wouldn’t be able to claim his prize on the flight. But as it turned out, he could stomach it afterall – when he ATE the scratchcard.

The man, who was flying from Krakow, Poland to East Midlands Airport won $10,000 with the scratchcard, but when staff informed the passenger that he would have to collect his jackpot directly from the operating company.

Stephen McNamara, a spokesman for the airline said that passengers and cabin crew tried to placate the man but he stood up and ate it anyway, ruining any chance he had of collecting his prize.

The money will now be donated to charity with passengers being asked by the airline to vote online to decide which charity should receive the windfall.

Ryanair’s new business lounge at Stanstead Airport will operate on a pay-as-you-visit basis. No.1 Lounges has announced the opening of a new No. 1 Lounge in the airport, which is situated in satellite three opposite Ryanair’s departure gates. Use of the lounge will set users back £17.50 per visit, although it will offer all the benefits of a VIP lounge including free wi-fi, bar, food court and newspapers and magazines.

It’s the second No.1 Lounge to open at the airport – the first was opened in September last year in satellite one. However, due to its location it wasn’t suitable for Ryanair passengers.

No.1 lounges can be booked online, in advance, for just £17.50 from www.No1Lounges.com

Irish airports were hit by severe disruption on Wednesday, with warnings the disruption could get worse. The disruption comes amid a working dispute following the suspension of air traffic controllers which has seen more than 100 flights being cancelled.

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) moved to suspend air traffic controllers for refusing to carry out ‘normal assigned duties’ which in turn caused IMPACT – the largest public sector union in Ireland – to take disruptive action, according to Reuters.

Budget carrier Ryanair said it was forced to scrap 48 flights on Wednesday affecting more than 6000 passengers while Aer Lingus had to cancel 64 flights as a result of the dispute.

The disruptive action, which takes the form of mandatory union meetings, will take place between 2 p.m. (2:00 p.m. British time) and 6 p.m. on Wednesday in Dublin airport and Shannon in the west and between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. in Cork in the south.
