BBC Scotland are reporting that a new airline is to step into the breach created by the collapse of Flyglobespan at Glasgow Airport.

Kiss Flights, which operates from eight UK airports are to offer twelve summer routes to the Mediterranean from April, including Spain, Greece and Turkey. The flights are to be operated on behalf of Kiss Flights by the Swedish carrier, Viking Airlines using Boeing 737 aircraft.

“Kiss Flights are enjoying a period of strong growth and we are delighted to be able to offer these flights from Glasgow.” Said Kiss Flights director Paul Moss. “Since the demise of Flyglobespan we have had unprecedented requests from the travel trade to offer increased capacity from Scotland.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: “Kiss Flights has a great deal of past experience in the UK travel industry and they have made a significant commitment to Glasgow Airport this year, serving many of the destinations once served by the Globespan group.”

Flyglobespan collapsed in December 2009 after its parent company, Globespan, was put into administration. The group’s appointed card processor, E-Clear is currently embroiled in an investigation over claims it has withheld around £30 million from Globespan.

French Capital flights affected by strike action

Posted by Brian | Filed under air

Flights at Paris’ two main airports – Charles de Gaulle and Orly – have been disrupted by a strike from air traffic controllers protesting over job cuts and reforms.

The DCAG aviation authority said that around 15% if flights in and out of Charles de Gaulle – Paris’ main international airport – were affected while as many as half of all flights in and out of Orly would suffer distruption and cancellation as a result of the strike.

The strike is expected to continue through to Friday morning and comes at a time where the both airports have also been affected by delays due to snow.

Buyers Beware of Duty-Free Deception

Europe's largest duty-free shopping area

Anyone who has ever spent time in an airport departure lounge will at one point or another in time browsed through the duty free shop in order to waste a few precious minutes before their flight departs – some people may even buy something.

But, thanks to a new scam happening in several Asian airports, including Bangkok and Phuket in Thailand, browsing the duty free could cost much more than one could ever dream.

The scam, known as the ‘zig-zag’ scam involves an unsuspecting tourist being apprehended by a security guard on suspicion of shoplifting and getting removed from the departure lounge to a nearby police station where a painstaking interrogation – sometimes involving intimidation and bullying – takes place until the ‘accused’ hands over a sum of cash to buy their freedom.

The Irish Independent online carries a story of two British IT workers who fell prey to the scam and were forced to pay around £5,000 to a police official in order to secure their release. However, when they contacted the British embassy they were told they had fallen foul of the scam and had in fact paid a middleman.

So, the next time you’re in Asia awaiting a flight home it might be a wise idea to steer clear of duty free altogether, otherwise you might be counting the cost of much more than a bottle of perfume or a packet of cigarettes.
