Jay & Silent Bob director Kevin Smith has vowed never to fly with Southwest Airlines again, after the airline pulled the film director off a flight on Saturday because of his bulk.

Smith was removed from a flight at Oakland International Airport, California to Burbank, California after the flight captain deemed Smith’s ample frame to be a ‘safety risk’ to other passengers. The eviction led to a Smith-led Twitter storm against the airline.

Smith had fallen victim to a Southwest Airlines booking guidelines for a “customer of size” which say that passengers who are unable to lower both armrests when seated should book another seat because of complaints it has received from customers whose comfort has been ruined by the “encroachment of a large seatmate”.

Smith claims he had no trouble in fastening his seatbelt or lowering either armrest. “I am not fat enough to eject off a Southwest flight,” he said.

Cardiff Airport has revealed a £5m plan to redevelop its terminal building. The redesign forms part of the airport’s wider £15m investment strategy and work on the project could begin later in the year.

The BBC report that plans have been drawn up to extend the front of the terminal building, as well as link arrival and departure halls and provide new catering and retail services for passengers.

The approach area to the front of the terminal building will also be redeveloped and landscaped, while the security control point to access the departure lounge will be moved from its current location.

Managing director Patrick Duffy said he wanted to “present a modern statement for the region” and boost business.

BBC Scotland are reporting that a new airline is to step into the breach created by the collapse of Flyglobespan at Glasgow Airport.

Kiss Flights, which operates from eight UK airports are to offer twelve summer routes to the Mediterranean from April, including Spain, Greece and Turkey. The flights are to be operated on behalf of Kiss Flights by the Swedish carrier, Viking Airlines using Boeing 737 aircraft.

“Kiss Flights are enjoying a period of strong growth and we are delighted to be able to offer these flights from Glasgow.” Said Kiss Flights director Paul Moss. “Since the demise of Flyglobespan we have had unprecedented requests from the travel trade to offer increased capacity from Scotland.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: “Kiss Flights has a great deal of past experience in the UK travel industry and they have made a significant commitment to Glasgow Airport this year, serving many of the destinations once served by the Globespan group.”

Flyglobespan collapsed in December 2009 after its parent company, Globespan, was put into administration. The group’s appointed card processor, E-Clear is currently embroiled in an investigation over claims it has withheld around £30 million from Globespan.
