Something new Todou on the internet

It would seem that YouTube are not the only company to have their own brand of video sharing influence internet users of today. Todou – the popular video sharing site in China – is continuing to prove to be China’s answer to YouTube.

Todou was started in January 2005 by Gary Wang, just a month before YouTube had taken to the internet. It was a concept that Wang was confident would be a success; which is especially true in China considering how the internet is seen by many as simply an alternative to TV. As it goes, internet users in China no longer perceive the world wide web as somewhere to obtain a wealth of information, but rather as the main entertainment hub.

And the figure of attracting approximately 12 million users a day clearly displays the popularity of Todou. It is also interesting to know that the word Todou is actually a play on the English term “couch potato”, translating as the Chinese word for potato. However, the meaning of the word is not to be taken too seriously, especially as it is translated to “peanuts” in Taiwan!

Although, it is not too difficult to see why Todou has made such an impact with its followers; especially as it continues to improve its services for users, such as allowing quicker downloads of clips. What’s more, it provides opportunities for both amateur and professionally trained directors/producers to have their work exposed.

The popularity of Todou (and video sharing sites in general) can only continue to grow, especially if they continue to attract capital to further improve their services. And this is surely great news if you want to promote videos over the internet that would make even Peter Jackson proud!
