Service with a Beep, not a smile

Where sushi bars started with conveyor belts meaning the need for waiters could be removed, it seems that there is a new way to keep all traces of human interaction in a restaurant to an absolute minimum – the “e-menu”.

In Israel, Conceptic Top Solutions has begun installing the new e-Menu touch screen technology into sushi bars, pubs and family restaurants. The customer can order their food directly with the kitchen without the risk of anything as old fashioned as a human waiter messing up the order.

Benefits highlighted by Rebecca Harrison mirror Microsoft’s assertion that the system will “transform the way people shop, dine, entertain and live.”

However that view was not shared by one businessman in Frame, who was quoted by Jaimon Joseph, saying, “It’s a gimmick and gimmicks have very short lives.”

Similar technology is already in use in the US and Japan which lets waiters take orders on cell phones and PDAs.

The next obvious step to save time and effort is to allow diners to not even have to go to the restaurant to eat the food …oh, yeah, that’s called home delivery.
