Money Really Does Grow on Trees

Posted by Brian | Filed under blogging

As the BBC recently reported, a new scheme in London can now put a price on trees.

There are a 5 factors the scheme takes into account when valuing a tree:

1. The size of the tree (the most important factor)
2. The human population density of the surrounding area (the more people there are to enjoy the tree, the higher its value)
3. The size of the canopy
4. The tree’s life expectancy
5. The tree’s impact on its immediate location (e.g. a tree which drops sticky sap on nearby cars will have a score lower than a tree which doesn’t)

The ultimate purpose of the new scheme is to prevent trees which are deemed to have a high value to the local community from being axed. The system has been trailed in London and will soon be adopted by other local authorities in the UK, such as Bristol.

Tree huggers, those in the tree growing business and other tree bloggers are expected to welcome the scheme, which by putting a monetary value on a tree can change developers attitudes towards these often under appreciated assets.

As Jon Stokes of the Tree Council puts it:

“It’s not just a tree, it’s something that is part of the estate of this local authority or this person, therefore you need to protect it.”
