Cheapflights report that Easyjet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannu is to sue Ryanair founder Michael O’Leary. The Ryanair boss has been named in a libel writ following his portrayal of Mr Haji-Ioannou as a Pinocchio figure who refuses to publish punctuality statistics for easyJet flights.

The Easyjet founder has roped in legal representation in the form of law firm, Schillings, after an attempt by O’Leary to defuse the row backfired. O’Leary challenged Stelios to a ‘Chariots of Fire’-style race around London’s Trafalgar Square.

It’s the second lawsuit launched by Easyjet against their budget airline rivals after the Dublin-based carrier claimed Easyjet was a ‘high-fare airline.’

Ryanair have courted a lot of controversy in recent times, sullying bloggers and passengers with equal disregard and now the rivalry between the two looks set to spill over into the courtroom.

“It was about time someone was willing to spend the money to take this arrogant man to court for his despicable behaviour,” Sir Stelios commented after announcing his decision to sue Mr O’Leary. “He called me a liar, I am not a liar. That is libellous, and I will seek substantial damages.”
