Troubled holiday firm Thomas Cook is in the news again – this time after a swathe of holidaymakers fell ill during their holiday to the Dominican Repulic.

Coming hard on the heels of news that Thomas Cook’s parent company, Arcandor, had gone into liquidation, the travel firm and subsidiary My Travel have been forced to pay out a whopping £2.5million to holidaymakers affected by a range of bugs they contracted while staying at the Bahia Principe Hotel between January and August 2007, and continued to send customers to the hotel despite growing numbers of people falling ill.

In total, 514 tourists were affected by a range of bugs including shigella – a bacteria which can cause dysentery, giardia (an intestinal parasite), salmonella and E-Coli – which saw 29 people hospitalised and many more requiring medical treatment. One plane which landed at Gatwick from the Dominican Republic was quarantined while another had to be boarded by doctors.

The holidaymakers were represented by solicitors Irwin Mitchell, who reached an out of court settlement with the travel firms.
