Australian authorities have issued a warning to ships sailing around the country’s southwest coast to be wary of a giant iceberg, which has been spotted approaching the area.

The gigantic mass of ice, which measures 54 square miles was seen drifting towards Australia’s southwest course but is still some 1100 miles from the coastline.

However, it isn’t the giant body of the iceberg which has caused the warning to be issued, but the danger that it will fragment into many smaller blocks as it enters warmer waters, creating hazardous conditions for sea-farers.

The block was first seen via satellite at 12pm on December 9th according to the Bureau of Meteorology, and is believed to have dislodged from the Antarctic ice shelf around ten years ago when the Ross Sea Ice Shelf and Ronne Ice Shelf fractured.

Lightshow mystery over Norwegian Skies

Posted by Brian | Filed under blogging

A strange lightshow lit up the Norway skyline on Wednesday night, leaving many witnessed puzzled as to what it was they were seeing.

Many theories have been put forward for the bizarre light; with everything from a Russian rocket to a shock wave and even a sign from God! Strangely, no-one has come forward to claim it was a UFO yet.

According to a report published on DigitalJournal.com the strange illumination began first with a blue light which flew up from behind a mountain before stopping and then began to move around in a circle, creating a spiral pattern in the sky.

The pattern took over the sky in quick time before a greenish blue light appeared to shoot out from the spiral’s centre, glowed for around ten minutes and then disappeared from view.

The Mail Online reports that the Norwegian Meteorological Institute was swamped with calls from curious spectators reporting the strange light.

Astronomers reported that the light was not associated to the Aurora Borealis, which is a common sighting in Norway, while Russia denied conducting missile tests.

However, increased speculation suggests the light display was caused by a test failure of the jinxed Russian Bulava missile which was test-fired from the Dmitry Donskoi submarine, which is stationed in the White Sea.

City of Red as dust storm blankets Sydney

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - SEPTEMBER 23: The Sydney ...

Those familiar with HG Wells’ ‘War of the Worlds’ will know of the red weed which blankets the earth after the martians win the first war. So imagine how residents of Sydney, Australia felt when they awoke to find their city shrouded in a red haze.

No, it wasn’t the martian weed that was the cause but a thick blanket of dust which blocked out the sun. The red colouration is a result of the sun reflecting off the dust.

The dust is down to some strong winds in the New South Wales area over a sustained period which has stirred a lot of dust off the ground and into the air, and the winds have carried the dust into Sydney.

The dust created widespread havoc with Sydney’s transport systems with visibility greatly reduced, while flights were delayed and ferries cancelled.
