‘No Scan, No Fly’ rules come into force today

Under new rules some passengers at Manchester and Heathrow airports will have to undergo compulsory full body scanners before being allowed to board their flight.

Those who decline the scan will be refused clearance to fly under the new security rules brought through in the wake of the failed Christmas day bombing.

Concerns have been raised regarding the potential breach of passengers’ rights to privacy and as yet only a small proportion of passengers would have to undergo the scans said Transport Secretary Lord Adonis.

Manchester Airport has been using full-body scanners since October in its Terminal 2 building, with plans to introduce them into Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 before the end of the month. Strict privacy procedures are in place and security staff are not allowed to view passengers naked, while the scanners cannot store or capture images and security staff cannot recognise people in the scanner.

The government has also overturned a ruling which prevented under-18s from being vetted through the scanner.
