A suspect white powder which sparked an airport terror alert at Manchester Airport has been identified as dried cow’s blood.

The substance had caused the evacuation of the airport’s Terminal Three building after being discovered in the luggage of a BMI passenger at the airline’s check-in desk on last Saturday. Passengers faced a delay of six hours while tests were carried out.

However, the substance was identified as Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) which is used in lab tests and medical research. BSA is a harmless protein made from the blood of cows, with the only risk coming where cattle is diseased.

With the UK terror alert level being raised recently, Manchester Airport bosses believe they were right to order an evacuation of the terminal following the discovery, where the passenger – who was flying to London – was found with 19 screw-top canisters containing 20kg of the BSA substance in his bag.

Were they right? Let us know in the comments.

Customs officers at Shannon Airport got some rich pickings when they discovered ten rhino horns worth an estimated €500m.

The horns were seized when officials at the airport conducted three separate searches, with the items being found in suitcases of individuals who were attempting to smuggle the items through the airport.

The seizures were made under CITES, an international convention which aims to curtail international trade in endangered species. The horns are extremely valuable and prices are currently estimated at $50,000 per kilo. One likely use for the horns would be in traditional Chinese medicine.

Seizures of such size are rare, with the only comparable one in recent times was in South Africa in 2009.

Of the horns seized, six were from white rhinos, which are an endangered species while four were from black rhinos, which are critically endangered reports RTE.

Cardiff Airport has revealed a £5m plan to redevelop its terminal building. The redesign forms part of the airport’s wider £15m investment strategy and work on the project could begin later in the year.

The BBC report that plans have been drawn up to extend the front of the terminal building, as well as link arrival and departure halls and provide new catering and retail services for passengers.

The approach area to the front of the terminal building will also be redeveloped and landscaped, while the security control point to access the departure lounge will be moved from its current location.

Managing director Patrick Duffy said he wanted to “present a modern statement for the region” and boost business.
